Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breast by placing an implant beneath the existing breast tissue. There are many variables to consider when considering breast enhancement. The existing size and shape of the breast, the shape and size of the chest and body, whether or not there is laxity of the existing tissue, the symmetry of the breasts, and the desired increase in size.

Other considerations when thinking about breast augmentation are the type of implants that can be used. The first is the saline implant. With this type of implant, saline ( salt water ) is used to fill the implant. The other option is silicone gel. The silicone implant is filled with a viscous silicone polymer which creates a more natural feel. Both of these implants are FDA approved. During the consultation, Dr. Franco will discuss the pros and cons of each type of implant to determine which implant is right for you.

Another factor to consider is whether or not a breast lift is necessary at the time of placement of the implant. A breast lift is technically called a mastopexy. With age and after pregnancy the breast tissue develops laxity and sags. It is sometimes necessary to lift the breast at the same time as augmentation to achieve the desired shape and contour. Examination at the time of the consult will determine whether or not this is necessary.

Once these factors are determined then the approach for placement of the implant can be determined. Most commonly an incision is made just beneath the breast to place the implant. This can be hidden in the fold beneath the breast. Another option is to make an incision around the nipple. This most commonly is done when in conjunction with lifting the breast.

Dr. Franco has over 12 years experience with breast augmentation and takes into account all of these factors when deciding the appropriate approach for each patient.
