Facial Laser Resurfacing

Published by ga3@seodesignchicago.com

When it comes to improving the look and feel of your skin, there aren’t many treatments as effective as facial laser resurfacing. This procedure has become popular for many people as a way to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and even out skin tone. But what exactly is it, and is it the right choice for you?

In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about laser skin resurfacing, including how it works, its benefits, potential risks, and what to expect during and after the procedure.

What is Facial Laser Resurfacing?

Facial laser resurfacing, also referred to as laser treatment for the face, is a non-surgical procedure that uses laser technology to remove the damaged outer layers of your skin while at the same time stimulating collagen production. This gives you smoother and younger-looking skin. It’s commonly used to address issues like fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, uneven skin tone, and enlarged pores.

There are different types of laser face treatments, and which one you choose depends on your skin type, your concerns, and what kind of results you’re looking for.

Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin treatments fall under two main categories: those that use ablative lasers and those that use non-ablative lasers.

Ablative Lasers

Ablative lasers remove the outer layers of the skin, encouraging the growth of new, healthy skin cells. They are typically used for deep wrinkles, scars, and other major skin imperfections.

While ablative laser treatments can give you more obvious results, they also require a longer recovery period compared to non-ablative lasers. Patients can expect redness, swelling, and peeling for several days to weeks post-treatment. However, once the skin heals, the results can be long-lasting and will greatly improve your skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.

Non-ablative Lasers

Non-ablative lasers work beneath the skin’s surface, stimulating collagen production without removing the outer layers. These are great for addressing issues like mild wrinkles, pigmentation, and redness.

At the Center for Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, we use a wide range of leading-edge Sciton laser systems to address skin-related conditions. These include ablative resurfacing, hybrid ablative & non-ablative fractional laser resurfacing, and non-ablative fractional laser resurfacing.

Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing

There are many benefits of laser skin resurfacing. Here, we cover a few of the main ones our patients can expect to see.

Reduce Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Wrinkles can begin forming as early as age 25. By stimulating collagen production, laser treatments help smooth out the skin and reduce the appearance of aging.

Treat Acne Scars

Ablative and fractional lasers can reduce the appearance of acne scars by encouraging new skin cell growth.

Correct Pigmentation Issues

Skin pigmentation disorders include anything that affects the color of your skin. Sunspots, age spots, and melasma can be treated with targeted lasers that break down extra pigment.

Improve Skin Texture

Lasers can reduce the size of your pores, smooth rough skin, and improve the overall tone of your face.

Remove Unwanted Hair

Lasers can remove unwanted hair from the face. These treatments can be long-lasting since they target hair follicles and prevent future growth.

Is Laser Treatment for My Face Safe?

Yes, a large body of research has shown that laser treatments are safe when performed by a qualified professional. However, as with any cosmetic procedure, there are some risks involved. Possible side effects include redness and swelling, temporary hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, sensitivity to sunlight, and mild discomfort.

Choosing a licensed laser skin treatment provider will reduce your risk of complications. Similarly, to minimize risks, you should follow your provider’s pre- and post-care instructions.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your facial laser resurfacing procedure will take place in four main steps: consultation, preparation, treatment, and then cooling and soothing.

During your consultation, your laser specialist will evaluate your skin and discuss your goals to decide on the best laser type for you.

On the day of your procedure, your skin will be cleansed, and in some cases, a numbing cream or local anesthesia will be applied.

When it’s time for your treatment, your specialist will pass the laser over the areas you’ve decided to treat, removing damaged skin cells and stimulating collagen.

After, a cooling gel may be applied to calm the skin.

Recovery and Aftercare

Healing after undergoing facial laser resurfacing is usually straightforward, though healing times may change slightly depending on the type of treatment that was done. Ablative treatments may mean you’ll need 7-14 days of healing, while non-ablative lasers typically don’t involve much downtime.

Regardless of the type of laser, it’s important to avoid direct sun exposure after your treatment and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. Keep the treated area clean and moisturized, and use gentle, fragrance-free skincare products. You should also be sure to follow your provider’s aftercare instructions, which may include using specific moisturizers or avoiding certain skincare products.

Who Can Get a Laser Face Treatment?

Many people are great candidates for laser facial treatments since these procedures tackle a range of skin concerns. You might be a good candidate if you have visible signs of aging, like fine lines, wrinkles, or sagging skin, as well as issues like sun damage, hyperpigmentation, or acne scars. Before undergoing treatment, it’s important that you don’t have any open wounds or cuts.

If you’re not sure if laser treatment is right for you, book a consultation with a specialist to help you figure out the best option based on your specific skin.

First time here & I will definitely be back! Allison did my Botox. She was honest when I asked her what areas she thought botox would be best for me & explained the whole process. I have received botox at other cosmetic centers & this was by far the best experience!
