Rhinoplasty, sometimes called a “nose job” or “cosmetic nose surgery,” can change the size, shape and angle of your nose and bring it into better proportion to the rest of your face.
Rhinoplasty can also improve breathing by correcting structural imperfections such as a deviated septum, one of the most common causes of breathing difficulty.

The surgery
- In performing nose surgery in Naperville, we use IV sedation. The patient is asleep, comfortable, unaware of the procedure and breathing on their own.
- The surgery is performed using either a closed procedure, where incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure in which the incision is made across the columella, the narrow strip of tissue separating the nostrils. Dr. Rubach performs both approaches.
- Rubach can then gently raise the skin covering nasal bones and cartilage and begin reshaping the nose.
- Once the bone and cartilage have been rearranged and re-shaped, the skin and tissue are re-draped over the structure of the nose.
- Rubach can straighten a deviated septum and reduce the projections inside the nose to improve breathing.
- After surgery, a splint is worn on the outside of the nose for 5-7 days. Dr. Rubach does not place packing in the nose, so there is minimal pain following the procedure.
After surgery
- Minor swelling and bruising may occur, but you can minimize these by keeping the head elevated.
- Typically, bruising resolves in one to two weeks.
- If Dr. Rubach uses an open rhinoplasty approach, the stitches are removed in seven days.
- Patients frequently return to work or social activities within seven to ten days.
- Often within a week, the new shape of the nose is clearly visible, and after six months to a year, the nose will have assumed its permanent shape.
Risk factors
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks including:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Holes in the septum
- Nasal blockage caused by swelling in the nose

Generally, insurance does not cover surgery performed purely for cosmetic purposes. If any part of the surgery improves nasal function or corrects a traumatic nasal deformity, you may be partly or entirely reimbursed by your insurance carrier.
