Winter Sunscreen: What You Need to Know

It’s winter in Chicago and that can only mean one thing: layer up! Sure, you might not be spending your Saturdays at the beach or taking your lunch breaks outside, but that doesn’t mean your skin isn’t being exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. Many people pump the breaks on their sunscreen routine when the weather drops below 60 degrees. But sunscreen should be part of your skincare routine regardless of the season. You might be bundled in turtlenecks and sweaters but swiping on sunscreen year-round is one of the best things you can do for your skin.

Not convinced? Up to 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate clouds. A cloudy day doesn’t mean the sun’s away. Strong sun rays can take a toll on unprotected skin, causing premature aging and even potential skin cancer. We recommend using SPF 30 or higher every day for complete protection.

Speaking of skin cancer, one in five Americans will develop it in their lifetime. Fortunately, doing your part to prevent this from happening is actually quite simple. If you use a BB cream, try swapping in a product that contains SPF 30 or higher. You can even find a tinted BB cream that will simultaneously give you a flawless glow and protect your skin. Score!

Last but not least, wearing sunscreen can slow the aging process by 24%. There was a 2013 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine that found that sunscreen decreased the skin’s natural aging process by 24% compared to the test group that didn’t wear sunscreen. If skin cancer isn’t enough motivation to wear sunscreen every day, it’s anti-aging properties should be.
