Your #1 Winter Skin Necessity

Posted on December 12th, 2019 by Margo

Our cosmetic surgeon in Lisle, Il has harped on the importance of sunscreen before, but have you considered how important it is to wear sunscreen in the winter as well? Your mind might not be focused on SPF in the winter months, but sunscreen is just as important in the winter. In reality, the temperature is not a factor that should determine whether or not you wear sunscreen.

Snow Intensifies the Sun

You may think that you don’t need to wear sunscreen in the snow, but snow and ice can actually reflect up to 90 percent of the sun’s rays. These rays can cause skin cancer and produce wrinkles. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or simply taking a casual winter walk, make sure to apply sunscreen beforehand.

A Thin Winter Ozone Layer

You can think of the ozone layer as Earth’s sun shield that absorbs the UV rays. But did you know this layer is at its thinnest Also, keep in mind that windburn is a possibility in the winter in addition to sunburn. Windburn can result in your skin feeling dry, red and agitated, so you can protect yourself by wearing a neck warmer or scarf that helps cover your face. Additionally, slather on SPF 30 every time you go outside to keep your skin protected. Any SPF higher than 30 will have minimal impact, as SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of the harmful rays.

The winter is tough on your skin, but we have plenty of skin care procedures that can help rejuvenate your skin. Schedule an appointment with us today!
