I’m very often asked what can I do to prevent early or progressive signs of aging. The most effective thing that you can do is surprisingly simple; Use sunscreen. Ultraviolet light from the sun is comprised of high energy radiation that destroys collagen fibers and can alter the DNA of skin cells. Not only is this dangerous in regard to potential skin cancer, but ultraviolet light is incredibly damaging and results in progressive and early skin aging. Ultraviolet light is composed of UVA and UVB rays. Both of these can damage the skin resulting in breakdown of collagen fibers, uneven and blotchy pigmentation, dilated blood vessels, and wrinkles. An effective sun block protects from both UVA and UVB rays. The best sunscreens contain clear zinc or titanium dioxide. Creating the daily habit of applying sun screen can dramatically reduce the signs and progression of aging skin.
Once this damage occurs, one of the most effective and easy treatments is photofacial. This treatment involves application of bright pulsed light to the damaged skin. This decreases brown spots, reduces redness caused by dilated blood vessels and actually rejuvenates the skin. In a recent study, photofacial light treatments were shown to actually return the DNA gene expression of the skin cells back to youthful levels. This treatment is non invasive and results in no downtime or recovery. I highly recommend this based on high patient satisfaction and on actual personal experience with the procedure on myself.
