Did you know that August is Psoriasis Awareness Month? There are 7.5 Americans who suffer from psoriasis, which is a chronic, systemic immune system disease that appears on the skin as painful red, puffy patches. Psoriasis doesn’t discriminate in terms of affecting men versus women, and it occurs in all racial groups. Here’s what our cosmetic surgeon in Lisle, Il wants you to know about this disease.

It’s an Everyday Battle

The side effects of psoriasis present themselves in many different forms. First, simply struggling with the negative stigma that psoriasis has, especially because it is a disease that presents itself so visually. Social situations can become difficult if the skin has patches in very visible places such as the hands, arms, legs or feet. The impact of psoriasis is physical as well as mental. Those who have psoriasis may experience aches, exhaustion, pains and a risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

It’s Not Contagious

You cannot contract psoriasis from someone else who has it. Although it looks similar to a rash, physical contact does not cause the disease to spread.

There are Treatment Options

For moderate cases of psoriasis, there are certain ointments and creams that may be helpful in relieving pain and itchiness. Topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, anthralin, topical retinoids, salicylic acid and moisturizers are all common options. For more extreme cases of psoriasis, a doctor may prescribe oral medications or light therapy in conjunction with topical creams.

Taking care of your skin is important! Help spread awareness about psoriasis during Psoriasis Awareness Month.
