Even though a breast augmentation is an elective procedure, attention to detail is essential. Just like with any other surgery, the recovery period is imperative to achieving the desired results. Your doctor should discuss all post-operative instructions with you before the procedure even begins, but if you have any questions or concerns it is important you address them.

Here is a brief rundown of how the recovery process should look following a breast augmentation procedure:

Immediately Following the Procedure

When the surgery is complete, you will be taken into a recovery area to be monitored for a few hours. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze and a bandage or support bra to aid in healing and minimize swelling. Be sure to review medications, other care practices and follow-up before you leave to go home.

24-48 Hours Following the Procedure

You should relax and get plenty of rest for the first two days after the breast augmentation surgery. You may feel less energy than usual, but this is totally normal. While you shouldn’t overexert yourself, be sure to get up and walk around every so often to keep blood flowing in the legs. Avoid heavy lifting, exercising, running, biking, dancing, etc., and stick to wearing the surgical bra or a sports bra.

One Week+ Following the Procedure

After one week, you should be able to return to work, unless your job involves a lot of walking, lifting or other excess movement. Ask your doctor if you are unsure whether you are in a good enough condition to return to work. Patients generally are able to drive in one week. In three weeks patients can resume running and exercises that do not include lifting with the upper body. After approximately six weeks, you may be able to return to heavy weight lifting or other intense exercises. You will notice your scars begin to fade, but do not be alarmed if they redden a bit at first.

Within the first couple of weeks, you should see your doctor for a follow-up appointment. At this meeting the doctor will examine how your breasts are healing and ensure the results are looking how you want them to look. You can also discuss any side effects you may be experiencing; chances are the doctor will have recommendations on minimizing these negative effects.

In order to get the best results, you should schedule a private consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon. At this consultation you can discuss your wants, questions and any concerns to help the doctor individualize a plan for you. At the Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, Dr. Joseph Franco, M.D. meets with patients to get to know them before determining what procedure they need to achieve the best results.

First time here & I will definitely be back! Allison did my Botox. She was honest when I asked her what areas she thought botox would be best for me & explained the whole process. I have received botox at other cosmetic centers & this was by far the best experience!
