Fat transfer procedures consist of taking fat cells from one area of the body and transferring them to a different part of the body. This is an ideal way to use your body’s natural fat cells to change the desired area, reducing your risk of developing an allergic reaction. Plus, patients are typically happy with fat transfers because the end result is much more natural than other synthetic implants. Typically, our cosmetic surgeon serving Lisle, Il and surrounding areas will take the fat from areas such as the outer thigh and inject them to the desired area.
How is a Fat Transfer Performed?
Our team will perform the procedure in our office on an outpatient basis. Rest assured that both areas, where the fat is being taken from and where it is being placed, will be numbed using a local anesthetic. We will use a small needle that is attached to a syringe to remove tightly packed fat from a donor site on your body. Typical donor sites include your abdomen, your thighs or your buttocks and use it in the area of your choice.
From there, the fat is injected and evenly distributed into the site. Know that our team only injects small amounts of fat at a time to ensure that it is surrounded by healthy tissue.
When is a Fat Transfer Used?
Fat transfers are utilized in many procedures such as improving the appearance of the face, feet, hips, buttocks, or hands. There are also documented therapeutic benefits of fat grafting that can help heal wounds and scars. We often see fat grafting utilized in the following scenarios:
- Facial procedures for those who want to add volume to a hollowed-out area of the face, such as below the eye or in the cheeks. It’s also utilized in facial procedures to repair scars and improve skin texture and appearance.
- Hip procedures to add volume and increase the waist-to-hip ratio.
- Buttocks procedures to increase its size and positioning.
- Hands and feed procedures to reduce wrinkles and provide padding for bony feet.
