Recovering from Breast Augmentation

Posted on October 8th, 2018 by Margo

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime? Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, and over 252,710 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with it every year. Some women who have gone through a mastectomy or a double-mastectomy opt to have breast implants put in to restore their confidence. Here’s how the recovery process typically goes after a breast augmentation.

Gauze and Drainage

Your cosmetic surgeon in Lisle, Il will wrap your chest with gauze and, if necessary, place any drains to help get rid of excess fluid in your chest area. It is a good idea to wear a surgical bra while you are healing to help support the implants. Don’t do any heavy lifting in the following six weeks after your surgery. Depending on your pain level, your doctor will prescribe you pain medication, and you can also take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen. Swelling will ease and scars will fade with time.

Schedule Follow-Up Appointments

It is important to visit us after your procedure to make sure that you are healing properly. Complications may arise, such as the formation of scar tissue, bleeding or possible infections. Our cosmetic surgeon in Lisle, Il will make sure your breasts are healing as they should be. Keep in mind that breast implants do not last a lifetime and you may need to get them removed or replaced in the future.
