Nose Surgery, also referred to as Rhinoplasty or a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to alter the external appearance of the nose. The nose is one of the most significant and defining features on a face.* The goal of Rhinoplasty is to improve the nose aesthetically, making it harmonize better with other facial features. It is essential that the nasal shape and structure represents a refinement of the patient’s existing features and does not change the entire shape and appearance of the face. Dr. Rubach takes pride in his extensive experience with Rhinoplasty and with achieving natural and balanced results.*
Rhinoplasty is one of the more challenging cosmetic surgical procedures. It is a balance between form and function. It is imperative to ensure that patients’ ability to breath is not compromised and function is maintained while at the same time changing the structure to improve the form and shape of the nose. Achieving this requires significant focused training as well as significant experience. Dr. Rubach is an expert in rhinoplasty. He trained initially in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, where he gained significant understanding of nasal anatomy and management of breathing and airway issues. Following this he completed a fellowship in facial plastic surgery which focused entirely on plastic surgery in the facial region. He routinely performs 2 to 3 rhinoplasties per week and has over 20 years experience.
Rhinoplasty can be done through either a closed approach or an open approach. A close approach means that all incisions are made inside the nose with no external incision while an open approach requires a small incision at the base of the nose. Dr. Rubach performs both approaches. The decision for which approach is based on the patient’s underlying structure, the desired changes, and how extensive the surgical maneuvers will be that are required. Ultimately, a patient should not be concerned about which approach is used and should be more concerned with achieving the desired result.*
At the Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, we have an in office Joint Commission accredited surgery center where our rhinoplasty procedures are performed. The procedure is done with IV sedation and does not require general anesthetic. With IV sedation, the patient is asleep, comfortable, and unaware of this surgical procedure and breathing on their own. This does not require a general anesthetic where a patient requires it to be placed in the throat and a machine breeze for the patient. This is obviously beneficial and that the patient awakes feeling comfortable and free of the effects of general anesthesia. It is very rare, in Dr. Rubach’s experience, for rhinoplasty patients to experience much if any pain.*
After surgery, a splint is worn on the outside of the nose for 5 to 7 days for Naperville Rhinoplasty. Dr. Rubach does not place packing in the nose and as a result there is minimal pain following the procedure. Minor swelling and/or bruising is possible following surgery, however, keeping the head elevated can minimize this. If an open rhinoplasty approaches used, then the stitches are also removed in seven days. Typically, bruising resolves in 1 to 2 weeks. Patients are very often able to return to work or social activities within 7 to 10 days. It is then a matter of time for the nose to take the shape intended by the surgeon. Very often, the new shape of the nose is clearly visible even at the first post-op visit one week after surgery. After six months to one year, the nose will be at its permanent shape.*
